International Economics Texts
- Understanding the World Economy
This is Nouriel Roubini's e-text for an MBA course on the world economy. Very policy-oriented, but extremely well-written and insightful, drawing from the author's extensive experience in the field.
- Advanced International Trade: Theory and Evidence
This draft of the upcoming graduate trade text by Robert Feenstra is distinguished by a strong emphasis on empirical tests, as well as many downloadable empirical exercises that supplement the discussions in the text.
- International Trade Theory & Policy Analysis
Steven Suranovic's e-text on international trade. The main site also provides problem sets and a course syllabus. The text contains some basic math, although a particular chapter gives detailed derivations. Suranovic also has an e-text (still sparse) on International Finance Theory & Policy Analysis.
- Foundations of International Macroeconomics
Not strictly an online text, but the support site for this open-economy macro bible includes transparencies and the all-important solutions manual. A recently published, albeit less-known alternative by Asbjørn Rødseth is Open Economy Macroeconomics.
- Macroeconomic Policy in a World Economy
An excellent online text, by the creator of the Taylor rule. The monograph builds from a sound theoretical basis econometric techniques for estimating the international macroeconomic framework, and uses this for policy evaluation.
- International Economics
Robert Mundell has made available his classic 1968 text on international economics (which is out of print). The content itself is somewhat dated, although many lessons still ring true, and they serve as an excellent foundation for further study.
- Economics Net-Textbook
This text uses interactive graphics to present several economic models, including foreign exchange, comparative advantage and trade equilibrium. Provided by Ted Black, at the University of Maryland.
- Human Society and the Global Economy
This is an online version of a survey text in economics that employs the Institutionalist/Post-Keynesian approach. Provided by Kit Sims Taylor, at Bellevue Community College.
- Understanding Democracy: An Introduction to Public Choice
This text is a basic introduction to the public choice school, and comes in especially useful for formal modelling of international political economy. Provided courtesy of Patrick Gunning.
- Price Theory: An Intermediate Text
Although not directly related to international economics, this text by Daniel Friedman is a very useful intermediate micro text that comes in handy especially when working with models of trade theory.
- Games and Information
Again, another text not directly related to international economics, but of great value for those wishing to pick up (or simply refresh) concepts in game theory that are increasingly being applied to trade and open economy macroeconomic modelling. By Eric Rasmusen. Another online text, Strategy and Conflict: An Introductory Sketch of Game Theory, is available courtesy of Roger McCain.
Mathematical & Statistical Texts
- Lectures on Stochastic Calculus and Finance
An excellent introduction to the mathematics of quantitative finance. Topics start from beginners' level (probability theory, conditional expectations) and progress on to more complex financial mathematics (Brownian motion, option pricing).
- Handbook of Econometrics
Econometric modeling is often applied in international economic research, as in the other subfields of the discipline. The full text of volumes 1 through 4 are provided courtesy of Elsevier, in PDF format, and should be of interest in refreshing long-forgotten methodologies.
- Statsoft Electronic Textbook
This is a statistics text that provides discussions on statistical methods that ranges from the basic (basic statistics, ANOVA), to intermediate (linear regression, time series forecasting) to the advanced (nonlinear estimation). Other online statistics texts are Social Research Methods (Bill Trochim); StatNotes: An Online Textbook (David Garson); HyperStat Online Textbook (David Lane) and Resampling: The New Statistics (Julian Simon).
- Visual Calculus
Of course, modern international economics is not divorced from calculus, and this text is a good introduction to the subject - its strength is its interactivity and visual approach. Covers material to the level of Calculus I and II. An alternative, example-based site is Calculus.
